Panic Attacks

  • Panic attacks are very frightening and intense, You may well feel a severe tightening of the chest, a dizziness and profound feeling of being un well. Nausea, Sweating, Trembling and the sensation of your heart beating irregularly (palpations).

  • You may feel like your life is really threatened and have an overwhelming sense of fear apprehension and anxiety, that there is something seriously wrong.

  • The panic can just comes out of the ‘Blue’ when you are least expecting it. For no obvious reason.

  • Acupuncture treatment is very effective in reducing the symptoms and the frequency of occurrence of panic attacks.

  • Acupuncture treats the very core causes of panic attacks.

  • Panic attacks are becoming more common in young people in their 20’s and 30’s

  • In the UK approximately 1 person in 100 have panic attacks.

Increasingly in my acupuncture practice I am treating more and more young people with panic attacks.

This condition responds well to Acupuncture treatment  and when Mindfulness meditation is incorporated to the treatment the results often can be swift and lasting.

The primary causes of panic attacks  are an accumulation of factors which all peak at the same time. Similar to that of a series of waves, each of which are not individually  dangerous of themselves but when they become simultaneous  they can build into a Tsunami.

The individual waves are often constructed from everyday issues such as:

  • long term tiredness,
  • work demands and pressures,
  • home demands and pressures,
  • emotional relationships,
  • money worries,
  • loneliness,
  • isolation,
  • long term over adrenalisation
  • an aptitude to bottle things up mentally and emotionally.

Panic attacks are the whole of the endocrine and nervous system going into meltdown.

Acupuncture works by aligning the mental and internal physical responses of the body. Through balancing the meridian energies, the body itself  re-regulates the endocrine and autonomic nervous responses.

Relief is felt swiftly. Full recovery may take 6-8 weeks of treatment as the internal homeostatic mechanism, which regulates the responses  need to calm down and return to normal.

Mindfulness Meditation

This is a simply learnt method of secular meditation. It works  by calming the minds habitual tendencies to ruminate on thoughts and feelings in a circular pattern. (The process of worrying) .

Through focusing the mind, with a gentle 100% concentration, on aspects of the physical bodily sensations, it is possible to change the habitual patterning  and to allow the mind to rest and become more expansive. From this position, the internal stress looses it's grip on the mind and a sense of wellbeing and relaxation result. As the mind relaxes so does the body. The overall effect is for the body/mind continuum  to create and maintain a level of balanced optimum health.

Stress is tightness

Lack of motivation is looseness

Optimum is the balance point in the middle, not too tight not to loose

Mindfulness teaches us to concentrate  just on one thing at a time, with all our mental consciousness. This singularity brings about a huge degree of relaxation through out the rest of the brain and the mind, especially when the task in hand is  simple. So simple in deed that you have to stop yourself from falling asleep.

Acupuncture treatment is very effective in reducing the occurrence of panic attacks. Through treating the fear and the anxiety the patient can feel more secure and assured.

Everyone experiences feelings of anxiety and panic at certain times during their lifetime. It is a perfectly natural response,

particularly when you are in a dangerous or stressful situation. However, for people with panic disorder, feelings of anxiety,

stress and panic occur regularly and at any time.

Anxiety
Anxiety is a feeling of unease. The feeling of unease can range from mild to severe, and can include feelings of worry and

fear.

There are several different conditions that can cause severe anxiety. They include:
• phobias: an extreme or irrational fear of an animal, object, place or situation
• generalised anxiety disorder (GAD): a long-term condition that causes excessive anxiety and worry relating to a variety of

situations
• post-traumatic stress disorder: a condition that has psychological and physical symptoms and is caused by very frightening

or distressing events.

Panic attacks

Panic attacks are very distressing for those who suffer them.

They are an excessive occurrence of the feelings of anxiety which feed off each other creating a repetitive loop.

A panic attack occurs when your body experiences a rush of intense psychological (mental) and physical symptoms.
You may feel an overwhelming sense of fear, apprehension and anxiety. As well as these feelings, you may also experience

physical symptoms such as:
• nausea
• sweating
• trembling
• a sensation that your heart is beating irregularly (palpitations)

The number of panic attacks that you have will depend on the severity of your condition. Some people may have one or two

attacks each month, while others may have several attacks a week.
In the UK, approximately one person in 100 has panic disorder. Most people first develop the disorder when they are in

their twenties. The condition is approximately twice as common in women as it is in men.
