What is depression?

Most people experience occasional feelings of sadness or low mood and these feelings usually pass away after a short period of time. Depression is when these feelings persist and do not go away or they reoccur and begin to have an affect on your daily life.

Depression is likely to be caused by a combination of different factors psychological, genetic, biological and environmental. Some people are more prone to depression than others. Life changes and stressful events such as bereavement, illness, relationships, work and financial difficulties can all trigger symptoms of depression.

How can acupuncture help depression?

Acupuncture takes a holistic view of the relationship between the way the body works and how this affects the emotions as working together in symbiosis. A healthy, balanced body is reflected in balanced emotions, in the same way, an emotional condition that is excessive or prolonged can become the cause of physiological imbalance.

Acupuncture treatment helps you to feel better, more relaxed, more balanced and able to rise to the challenge that life presents, this supports the development of a new perspective, allowing us to see our life situation more clearly  which in turn, influences the way we react or respond to situations.

Anti depressant medication.

Acupuncture can be safely combined with conventional medical treatments such as anti-depressants, helping to reduce their side effects and enhance their beneficial effects.

Acupuncture treatment can help reduce the 'addictive quality' of conventional anti depressant medication, allowing a lower usage to produce the same positive results.

Acupuncture positively affects the homeostatic balance within the brain. Studies in Japan and the USA have shown that stimulation of certain acupuncture points have an effect on the Limbic system and the Autonomic Nervous System.
Within our brain we have a delicate homeostatic balance, a system which constantly monitors the chemical levels (hormones) in the blood stream of the body. In a healthy balanced body as soon as an imbalance is detected the message is sent out to either increase production, or cease production of what ever is needed. If, however, there is a problem in producing a certain chemical or family of chemicals then there can be consequences physically or mentalally. In the case of depression it can be that there is not an adequate production of serotonin, the happy molecule. If the body cannot produce adequate serotonin then the person may begin to feel down or depressed. The consequences of this mechanism can be a downward spiral, which feeds off itself generating a deeply rooted problem both mentally, emotionally and physically.
